Course theme: This course is intended for non professionals, post graduate students, with some basic knowledge in plant protection. The course will start with the basics of grape vine growing and grape production (first day) mostly in vineyards. The second day will be dedicated to phytosanitary aspects. Other topics are the identification of the most important diseases and pests, their life cycle and the strategies of control. On the third day local researchers will present their research again from the observation of the problem in the field until the laboratory results. The final topic latter in the afternoon will be “the wine making” in the “cantina Istituto Agrario San Michele”. The course will be fully in English. Weather permitting it will be overwhelmingly outdoor and can be physically demanding.

This course is open for all PhD students of the ETH, Uni Zuerich, Uni Basel and valued 1.5 credits. To acquire the credits a report on the three days has to be delivered electronically (cesare.gessler@agrl.ethz.ch).

Cost on site all included 350 € paid by the ETH plant sciences center for the PhD-students (four nights in double rooms and all meals). Travel to and from Mezzocorona on own responsibility.

Equipment: Good water proofed shoes, rain clothes, umbrella, clothes for warm weather.
